Makoma.
Makoma is an award-winning Christian, pop, R&B and dance musical group originating from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and established in the Netherlands. It is made up of 5 siblings (3 brothers and 2 sisters): Annie Makoma, Pengani Makoma, Tutala Makoma, Duma Makoma, Martin Makoma and a non-family member, Patrick Badine.
How the journey started.
The group Makoma was established by Tutala Makoma in 1993, and started performing in public as a group in 1995. The name of the band was “Nouveau Testament” (translated as New Testament”).
The family left Democratic Republic of Congo formerly known as Zaire because of political strife and established in the Netherlands, later moved to Germany, then returned in 1996 to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The band was renamed Makoma (the name of the family) after establishing in Europe. They record at the West coast Studios, also owned by Tutala Makoma in Rotterdam. Annie Makoma designs most of the group’s stage attire, and Martin Makoma doubles up as the group’s choreographer.
Is your new album gospel?
Yes the new album contains10 wonderful Gospel songs.
You dubbed your new album Evolution a comeback album. Why the break
after your last album?
We were waiting for this interview today. We were never away. We just did a few things and have our own families and now got the feeling it’s time to be back on stage.
Is this going to be a comeback for good?
Yes that’s for sure. All of us want this.
What inspired the album Evolution?
Evolution means for us that we as a band, our music and message changed to the next level and new generation. We saw that on the market at the moment not many new groups sing gospel and we like to bring something missing back to this part of the music.
What should fans expect from now on?
We are planning already today 5 tours for the next 2 years in Africa. West Africa starting with Ivory Coast and ending in Angola, East Africa starting in Kenya and end in Madagascar, Europa, USA/Canada and Australia/South Pacific. It would be definitely more than 30 countries. The tour is planned by Philipp and if you like to contact him just mail to Director@bc3media.co.uk.
You manager Philip said it took the group one year to finish the new album. What challenges did you guys face during recording?
That’s because we live in 3 different countries; Netherlands, Belgium and United Kingdom. So we were flying in to London every weekend to get all songs recorded.
When are we expecting the next album?
In about 2 years from now.
Is the group signed to any label?
No such deal as we sold just an exclusive license for one album. It’s a clear commitment to produce 5 albums and we’re looking forward to do so.
Where can one buy the new album?
You can buy the album on www.makoma.co.uk, on iTunes and Amazon. A DVD/CD pack will come out soon that you can also buy on www.makoma.co.uk and Amazon, in addition to some big African stores across the world. You can also buy from http://itunes.apple.com/nl/album/evolution/id499364711
Nollywoodgossip wish you the best.
